Walton County School District Celebrates Years of Reading Improvement

As students start their first day of school, Walton County School District is celebrating the success of its districtwide efforts to teach foundational reading skills, especially in Pre-K through 2nd-grade.

Since 2020, one of the district’s most effective literacy tools has been Reading Eggs from 3P Learning. English language arts (ELA) teachers in every grade use the program. Carla Sconiers’ students have been excited to use Reading Eggs because “the platform seems fun.” That excitement, coupled with diligent work by teachers and the district’s dedication to teaching the principles of the Science of Reading, has fueled the literacy improvement in Walton County. Sconiers said that the “fun” platform should get credit, too.

“Each year we are seeing an increase in proficiency for our ELA scores in all of the grade levels who utilize Reading Eggs,” she said.

Designed by educators for students from Pre-K to Grade 5, Reading Eggs applies the essential components of effective reading instruction: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Its explicit, systematic lessons, motivating rewards and easy-to-use interface help students build essential reading and phonics skills through regular, purposeful practice.

Having one board-approved curriculum that every teacher uses has allowed Walton County to maintain a consistent, districtwide approach to teaching literacy. It has also helped teachers prepare for lessons. Instead of scouring the internet for materials to teach the exact skill they want to emphasize, they can print out worksheets that are aligned to the same core principles that every other teacher in the district is teaching.

Reading Eggs’ on-screen component gives teachers a choice of how to teach each individual skill. Students might read independently on their devices, then handwrite worksheets to practice skills that they learn more effectively on paper. The technology also helps them manage classrooms where students are on different reading levels. Instead of using the broad measure of “reading levels” to create small groups, teachers can use Reading Eggs to deliver each student a lesson that targets the specific skill they need to improve.

As the new school year begins, Sconiers’ team will be tracking how each campus and the district as a whole are using Reading Eggs. During meetings with the principals, she’ll make a point of highlighting the schools that are making the most progress. This creates a friendly competition among schools, yet another way that Walton County School District uses Reading Eggs to maintain its focus on helping every student become a better reader.
